What was Operation Underworld?

Operation Underworld and the U.S. Government's Cooperation with the Mafia

Operation Underworld was the U.S. government's code name for their efforts to capture Axis spies and saboteurs during World War II with help from mafia members. The government worked with primarily Italian and Jewish organized crime figures from 1942 to 1945 to try to capture spies along the U.S. northeastern seaboard ports,  avoid wartime labor union strikes, and limit black market activities.
