What is "Big-Hearted Charlie Runs The Mile"?

Big-Hearted Charlie Runs The Mile is a children's book written by Gold-Star mother, Krista Keating-Joseph. Gold-Star Mothers are American mothers who have lost their sons or daughters in service of the United States Armed Forces. Sadly, Krista has had to bear this title ever since her son, Charlie, passed away in May of 2016.

Roughly a year ago today, a team of less than a dozen U.S. military advisers came under attack in Iraq from more than 100 ISIS members. Charlie Keating IV, a navy SEAL, was sent into rescue them. He was part of a "quick reaction force" whose goal was to extract the American advisers, and bring them to safety. When Charlie arrived in the village of Tel Askuf, once a predominately Christian city, about 20 miles north of the ISIS-held Mosul, ISIS fighters raced towards his unit seemingly out of nowhere. Not only did they have more than 100 men, but they attacked with three suicide truck bombs and a bulldozer.

"There were bullets everywhere,” said Army Col. Steve Warren, a Baghdad-based spokesmen for the U.S. Defense Department.

Horrifyingly, Keating was shot around 9:30 am, and at 10:19 he was medically evacuated by helicopter to a U.S. facility in nearby Erbil. He died soon afterward, (Navy Times) but according to an article from CNN all of the advisers made it back safely. Defense Secretary Ash Carter said Keating's death was "tragic" and called his actions "heroic." Meghan McCain sent her condolences to the Keating family:

Fast forward to today, and Charlie's memory lives on. His mom, Krista, has published a book honoring him and his service to our country. In "Big-Hearted Charlie Runs The Mile," Krista tells the story of a small kid who keeps working hard until he is able to reach his goal of running the mile (Fox News). The description on Amazon reads:

Big-Hearted Charlie Runs The Mile is based on a true story about a little boy who joins a track team and works hard to overcome his small size as he runs against boys who are much bigger. At first, he never wins a race. But Charlie doesn't give up, and his hard work pays off. He becomes a champion on the track and later a true hero in real life as a U.S. Navy SEAL.

This is just an incredible story, especially on Mother's Day. We've included a video interview from Krista about why she wrote the book and what it means to her. Below that is a link to the listing on Amazon. If you have kids order a copy and keep it around the house. If you don't order it for your cousins, grandchildren, or whoever else comes to mind. In the words of Charlie's mother:

"Every time a book sells, it's like he's still alive"

Let's all do our part to keep the memory of Charlie alive, and thank him for his service to our country.
