Helen Keller, Pete Seeger, Charlie Chaplin, and Langston Hughes were only 4 of the many hundreds of people accused of being communists during the red scare, which overtook Hollywood after the end of the Cold War. In the late 1940s an investigation led by the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) interrogated a number of prominent witnesses, asking bluntly “Are you or have you ever been a member of the Communist Party?” A group known as the “Hollywood Ten” resisted, complaining that the hearings were illegal and violated their First Amendment rights, and many more were implicated including the names listed above.
